Summer evenings just got more fun with these 4 Night Flashlight Games kids will love!
Growing up, my cousins lived next door, so during the summer, we’d play all day outdoors and late into the evening until our parents called us in. I have so many fond memories of the adventures we had together. From building forts to having races, riding our bikes, playing kickball, and squirt gun wars, just to name a few.
After a long day of play in the heat, we always got excited for the sun to go down so it would cool off and we could start the night games! There were four in particular that we played over and over. With eight or nine of us, it made splitting into two teams so perfect!Ā We had a blast hiding and running around in the dark.
I love that I get to continue this fun tradition with my own kids and introduce them to a few of my favorite night games as a child!
It’s so nice to get out and be silly and let loose! There’s something about games in the dark that are just so much more fun than when it’s light outside. š
And of course we couldn’t have a night out without our trusty flashlights! We live in the mountains, so we don’t get any light from the city, so things are pretty pitch black! Which makes night games all the more fun! š
But we also like to make sure everyone stays safe, so we hand out a flashlight to every player before starting. We always power our flashlights with our trustyĀ EnergizerĀ® Ultimate Lithiumā¢ batteries because we know they’ll provide lots of hours of light while we play!
EnergizerĀ® Ultimate Lithiumā¢ batteries are theĀ #1 Longest Lasting AA Battery and areĀ 33% lighter than alkaline batteries (AA/AAA only), which makes it easy for kids to carry their flashlights while running around the yard. They also have a 20 year shelf life, so we can stock up for summer evenings ahead!
I grabbed someĀ EnergizerĀ® Ultimate Lithiumā¢ batteries on my last grocery trip to Albertsons. There was a convenient battery center right towards the front of the store!
These games are super easy to play and so much fun! Let me tell you how.
- Kick the Can.Ā One person is designatedĀ ItĀ and an empty can is placed in the open playing field. The person who’s it closes his or her eyes andĀ counts to an agreed upon number, while the other players run and hide. The person who’s itĀ then tries to find and tag each of the players, always keeping a watchful eye on the can. Any player who is tagged is sent to the “jail,” usually in plain sight of the can. The rest of the free players attempt to kick the can before being tagged out. If they can kick the can without being caught, they set all the captured players free.
2. Hide and Go Seek. This is a common but fun game that kids alwaysĀ love!Ā One person is designated It and counts to a pre-determined number while the other players run and hide. That person then tries to find all the players, using the flashlight to peek into all those especially dim areas. The hidden players can turn off their lights once hidden to make it even more difficult to be found! The first person to be found is It for the next round!
3. Flashlight Tag.Ā This classic activity is so simple, but made even more exciting when played in the dark with flashlights! The person who’s It must chase and tag another player. Once tagged, they’re It and must do the same.
4. Capture the Flag. You’ll need a big, open space for this one. It’s also more fun if there are trees or other things to hide behind. Divide the space into two sections or “sides”. Divide the players into two teams. Each team will hide a flag (or other object) on their side. The players from the other side must cross over and try to find and grab the flag and run it to safety on their side without being tagged by the opposing players. If they are tagged on the opposite side, they must go to “jail”. The other players on their team can get them out of jail by tagging them and running back to the safety of their side without being tagged by the opposing players.
These games are so much fun when played in the dark! Just don’t forget the flashlights! And please use caution and stay safe!
