I love zucchini season! Of course, I like to find a way to make it into dessert. This Chocolate Zucchini Bread is absolutely incredible! If your kids are scared of zucchini, just call it chocolate bread, because they won’t even know the zucchini is there!
I love chocolate desserts of every kind. I also am a huge zucchini fan. I love zucchini bread too, so I thought, why not combine the two in a scrumptious dessert bread? I grated the zucchini very finely, so you don’t even notice it in the bread! It makes the texture soft and the flavor amazing, but you won’t have little chunks in every bite. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want the carrots in my Carrot Cake or the zucchini in my zucchini bread to be really noticeable. I guess you could say that I like to hide my vegetables in my desserts, haha. Although, I just learned that zucchini is technically a fruit. Thanks, Google! 🙂
I like to have a little treat for my kids to enjoy when they get home from school. They were so excited to smell this bread when they walked in the door the other day! They were a little weirded out that I called it Chocolate Bread. Bread to them just shouldn’t involve chocolate, haha. Typically my homemade bread involves yeast and can be made into a sandwich, so this rocked their world a little bit. But I assured them that it was just like chocolate cake, but in a loaf form. And then they couldn’t get enough of it!
Each bite is so tender and delicious and full of chocolate flavor! I wished I would have added even more chocolate chips to the batter, so I’ve included that in the final recipe. I love the chocolate chips on top. They provide some added excitement for the taste buds.
This recipe makes two loaves, so you can totally freeze one for later. This is perfect to put in the kids’ school lunches or to wrap up and gift to a neighbor! I love homemade bread in every form, whether it’s dessert or used for a sandwich, it makes me so happy. I’m a carb-loving gal.
I have fond memories of visiting my aunts and grandma once a month, growing up. They’d always have a special dessert waiting for us. This time of year, they’d make Zucchini Bread. My siblings and I went crazy for it! So I made sure to post their scrumptious recipe on this blog years back. Now we’ve got a chocolate version to add to it.
Do you like to add chocolate chips to your zucchini bread? I certainly do. I can’t believe what strong feelings people have on this topic. There are those purists who believe that chocolate chips do not belong in zucchini bread, ha! I am not one of those people. I could basically add chocolate chips to anything and be happier for it. I prefer to use semi-sweet chocolate chips in this bread, but I’m sure milk chocolate would be fine as well.
Also, don’t be afraid of the addition of sour cream to this recipe. So many cakes and treats that I love call for sour cream, and I’ve found that it makes them more moist. No one likes a dry cake! Don’t worry, it doesn’t make the dessert taste sour. So, I guess what I’m saying is embrace the sour cream! 🙂

Chocolate Zucchini Bread
Ingredients
- 1 c. salted butter softened
- 1 c. light brown sugar
- 3/4 c. granulated sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
- 2 c. finely shredded zucchini Peel it first and don't drain the liquids
- 3/4 c. sour cream full fat
- 3 c. all-purpose flour
- 1/3 c. baking cocoa
- 2 tsp. baking soda
- 3/4 tsp. salt
- 1 c. semi-sweet chocolate chips melted
- 1 c. semi-sweet chocolate chips to stir in
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Grease two 9Ă—5 inch loaf pans well.
- In the bowl of an electric mixer, cream together softened butter, brown sugar, granulated sugar, eggs and vanilla.
- Add shredded zucchini and sour cream and mix just until incorporated. Be careful not to overmix.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking cocoa, baking soda, and salt. Add it to the wet mixture and mix just until incorporated.
- Pour in 1 c. melted semi-sweet chocolate chips and mix just until incorporated.
- Stir in 1 c. semi-sweet chocolate chips by hand.
- Divide batter evenly between the two greased loaf pans and spread. Sprinkle more chocolate chips on top (however many you'd like).
- Bake for approximately 50 minutes to around one hour, or just until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Moist crumbs are ok. Every oven is different, so be sure to check it regularly.
- Allow it to cool in the pans for 15-20 minutes, then run a butter knife around the outside to help the loaves to release completely. Carefully remove them from the pans and allow them to cool on a cooling rack completely. Slice and enjoy.
Enjoy! I can’t wait for you to try this!
