Dutch Apple Pie Bars

These delectable Dutch Apple Pie Bars with a tasty crumb topping and cinnamon sweet glaze are sure to have you yearning for fall and the cooler weather!
So remember these Dutch Peach Pie Bars from a little while ago?  They’re pretty unforgettable.  Well, I couldn’t get enough of them, and since apples are popping up on trees all over right now, I decided to alter the recipe a bit and add the beautiful in-season fruit.
This version includes a similar crumb topping, chopped apples tossed in a spiced sugar mixture, an irresistible cinnamon glaze on top, along with one of my favorite types of nuts…the fabulous pecan.  Yumm-o!
We have two apple trees in our backyard.  They’ve been there for around six years and haven’t really produced, but over the past year they really matured and thrived.  About a month ago, we noticed that they were growing mini apples that were beginning to ripen.  Notice I said “beginning”.  The kids and I got ants in our pants and decided we needed to pick them.  I don’t know that they’ve ever seen apples growing on trees, so it was a significant occurrence.
So I grabbed a plastic bag, we ran out all excited and plucked a bunch from the trees.  You may have seen our pretty red treasures if you follow me on Instagram.  They were so cute!
But they didn’t taste very good because we jumped the gun on the readiness factor.  Luckily we left quite a bit on the trees that we allowed to ripen in the sun for a few more weeks and then picked to our hearts’ content.
This batch of apples was juicy and succulent!  It was a lesson in patience for all of us. 🙂  Good things really do come to those who wait.
And speaking of good things…this recipe just might be the best thing that ever happened to your dessert queue, so I’ll hand it over now.
{DUTCH APPLE PIE BARS}

Crust
1/2 c. pecans, chopped
2 c. all-purpose flour
1 c. oats
2/3 c. brown sugar
3/4 c. butter, melted
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
Apple Filling
3 1/2 c. apples, peeled and diced fairly small
1/8 c. white sugar
1/8 c. brown sugar
1/8 c. flour
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
Glaze
1 c. powdered sugar
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
1 Tbsp. milk, or a little more, until desired consistency is reached
Instructions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.  For the crust, stir together pecans, flour, oats, brown sugar and cinnamon.  Incorporate melted butter completely until all the mixture is moistened by it.  **Reserve 1 c. of the crust mixture for the topping.   Press remaining crust mixture into the bottom of a 9″x 13″ pan and bake for 9-11 minutes.
While crust is baking, prepare apple filling mixture by stirring together white sugar, brown sugar, flour and cinnamon.  Add peeled, chopped apples and toss to coat completely.  When crust is finished baking, spread apple filling evenly over.  Sprinkle reserved crumb topping over and return to the oven.  Bake for approximately 20-25 minutes.
Let cool completely, then prepare the glaze by stirring together powdered sugar, cinnamon and adding milk until desired consistency is reached.  Drizzle over bars, cut, and enjoy!
You have my permission to take a bite. 🙂  If only…
This is a perfect fall dessert!  I’m excited for the leaves to start changing colors and the temperature to drop a bit. Are you?

I'd love to try these but can't do pecans/nuts. Any tweaks you'd suggest for nut allergy folks? Thanks!

Hi Stacy. I'd just try them sans nuts. They'll probably still work out just fine. If you'd like a substitute, though, maybe try toffee pieces.
