The kids are sure to love making (and eating) these very pretty Edible Nests!
They only require a few ingredients, and are a perfect springtime activity to get the little (and not-so-little) ones creating in the kitchen.
I have a confession to make: I’ve never been a fan of Peeps. Do you like them? I love plain marshmallows, but I can just never bring myself to waste the calories eating the fluffly, sugary pastel birds. They’re adorable and perfect to use as decorations, though! And I think it’s safe to say that kids usually don’t mind eating them.
I’m part of a little mommy preschool where we take turns hosting the kids at our house for one week out of the month. My topic last week was Spring, so I of course had to figure out a way to tie food into it. 🙂
The kids had a blast stirring everything together and forming the nests, then dotting them with tasty chocolate eggs. They couldn’t keep their hands out of the candy bag, and I finally had to hide it to save some for myself. 🙂
Can you tell he had a great time? It was all I could do to get a photo in before he attacked his creation.
I chose to use pretzels because the salty sweet combo is one of my favorites! To me it doesn’t get much better than chocolate and peanut butter-covered pretzels, and the kids thought so too.
Here’s how to make these simple, quick Edible Nests.
{EDIBLE BIRD’S NESTS}
Yield: about 6 nests
5 1/2 c. straight pretzels
1 c. butterscotch chips
1 c. peanut butter
1 pkg. Peeps Marshmallows
1 pkg. Cadbury Eggs, Robin Eggs, or large Jelly Beans
Combine chocolate chips and peanut butter in a small pot and stir constantly on stove top over medium heat, until chocolate chips are melted and mixture is smooth. Pour mixture over pretzels in a large bowl and toss until all pretzels are coated.
Wait a few minutes until the mixture has cooled a little and is safe to touch, then form into nests, making sure that the center will hold the eggs. Add little Peeps marshmallows to the side or on top of the eggs.
These yummy nests are a fun and tasty way to celebrate spring with the kiddos and to get them excited for Easter!
Enjoy!
