Serve up traditional Valentine’s frosted heart sugar cookies in a non-traditional way with these butterfly cookies with pretzel bodies!
When I was visiting family in Utah after Christmas, my creative sister-in-law, Kym, gave me this adorable idea for making heart cookies into butterflies! I thought it would be perfect since Valentine’s Day is almost here.
My kids and their friends had so much fun frosting the cookies and then decorating them with red hots and conversation heart candies. A large pretzel broken to size makes the perfect center for the butterfly’s body! Then, just add edible candy eyes with frosting as glue and you’ve got the cutest and yummiest butterfly in town!
I can’t get over how fun and simple these are! This is a more exciting, memorable way to serve up sugar cookies at your Valentine’s party! The guests can each pick a heart cookie wing and then fight over who gets the pretzels in the end. 🙂 Or, bake sugar cookies in bulk and let them decorate their own butterflies to take home! 🙂
This would be a great activity for preschool and other classroom parties!
I didn’t feel like making more-involved sugar cookies from scratch (but if you’re in the mood, THIS is my favorite recipe), so I used my favorite Cake Mix Cutout Cookie recipe, this time with a boxed white cake mix, and then I whipped up some pink buttercream frosting (just omit the cocoa powder in this recipe and add food coloring) and let the kids go to town decorating! About eight minutes was the ideal baking time for me and yielded perfectly soft, irresistible cookies! These things are addicting!
You’ll need:
Four heart sugar cookies per butterfly
Large pretzels, broken to fit in the middle
Edible googly eyes
Frosting
Candy for decorating
I laid them out on a parchment paper-lined cookie sheet so everyone could ooohhh and aaahhh over them. 🙂 These are a perfect party centerpiece!
Your Valentine’s Day celebrations need these darling heart cookie butterflies! The kids and adults will go wild for them!
