Love Boats: Valentine’s Day Kids’ Craft

My kids were begging me the other day to make a Valentine’s craft, and thus the oh-so-cute Love Boats were born!

Aren’t they cute?  The boat well is a perfect place to store festive treats!
On the weekends, I always have so much to get done around the house.  I feel like the work (mainly deep cleaning) just builds up and then finally I have to just break down and crank it out.  But I always like to set a side at least a few hours, take a break from the scrubbing and mopping, to spend some time having fun with my family.  That’s what weekends are all about, right?
This particular Saturday, the kiddos were itching to create, so I pulled out the paper, glue, and some tasty Valentine’s candy that I had stashed away in the back corner of the pantry (to prevent me from snacking uncontrollably), and we went to town making sweet-filled Valentine’s Love Boats!  They’re SO easy to make!
**For best results, practice first on scratch paper before using your nice patterned paper or cardstock!
{SUPPLIES}
Felt (we used pink and purple)
Valentine’s patterned paper and colored cardstock
Elmer’s Glue
Hot Glue
Valentine’s Candy
Scalloped Scissors (optional)
Popsicle Sticks
{INSTRUCTIONS}
Love this girl.  Messy weekend hair and all.  🙂 Make a heart pattern out of scrap paper and trace onto desired cardstock.  Cut with scalloped-edged scissors.  Cut one slightly smaller heart out of a correlating color of felt.

Glue  together using Elmer’s Glue.  Glue heart onto a Popsicle stick.

Now grab the cardstock or patterned paper that you’ll be using to make the boat.  Cut to be 8 1/2″x11″, or any size, as long as it’s a rectangle.  Fold in half and crease.

Fold in half again and crease.  We’re creating a guide line for our next folds.

Open the portion that you folded down in the last step and fold one side down to the crease line you created.

Fold the other side into the line.

Fold one layer of the bottom that’s overhanging up to the triangle that you just made. Crease.

Turn over and fold the back overhang up and crease.

Now open slightly and tuck one edge flap into the other.  Do the same to the other side also.

Now continue folding down into a diamond shape. Crease.

Fold one layer up and crease.

Turn over and fold that part up. You’ll have a small triangle.

Now open it like this and fold down into a diamond shape.

Pull sides apart carefully…

and push down into the shape shown above.

Open up, and you’ve finished the boat portion!  Now hot glue your Popsicle stick heart flag to the back of the triangle that’s sticking up in the center of your boat.  Fill with Valentine’s candy, and you’re done!

If using paper with a one-sided pattern or color, begin folding the design with colored portion on top, as shown above.

How fun are they?  I love Valentine’s colors!  Such an adorable decoration or even gift to small friends!
