Reader Submission: Chalkboard Wall Tutorial

I’m excited to share another reader submission with you today, from Annamaria!  I’ve been dying to make a chalkboard wall for my kids, so when I saw on Facebook that she had made one, I asked her to submit it so we could all learn how to do it!

Take it away, Annamaria!

I came across a picture of a chalkboard wall on Pinterest a bit ago and knew I had to do it someday…. preferably before my boys have grown up! So, for my Valentine’s Day gift I asked my husband to help me make this wall chalkboard. My love language is definitely service and time, and I just love that my man is so willing to help me with many of my projects (the ones requiring the use of the circular saw in particular).

Here’s how we made this fun chalkboard wall:

Step 1: Measure and then mark the perimeter (length and width) of the wall you are going to use as your chalkboard wall.

Step 2: Paint the area of your chalkboard wall with chalkboard paint. We used chalkboard spray paint—it works great but tends to diffuse everywhere (you’ll need to tape and cover the surrounding area so the paint won’t get on tile/carpet, etc). Let paint dry and do Step 3 in the meantime.

Step 3: We used some extra baseboard we happened to have for the frame of our chalkboard.  Paint your frame boards, if necessary.  Then measure and mark the correct lengths and widths on them.

Step 4: Have your husband (or if you’re handy with tools) cut the baseboards/frame boards to the correct lengths at 45 degrees. There will be 8 cuts total—2 per board.

Step 5: Once paint is dry, mount frame boards to the wall with glue and nails.  Fill in and then paint over the nail holes.

Step 6: Pull out your colorful chalk.

Step 7: Surprise your kiddos with a fun area where they can use their imaginations and be creative!

Step 8: Take pictures and enjoy!

This looks so do-able!  She has certainly inspired me.  What about you?

It’s also a great idea for a backyard!  Just buy a sheet of wood, sand and apply a few coats of chalkboard paint, make a frame if you want using Anna’s instructions above (no frame is necessary, though), and hang on the fence!  It would look like this one at Apartment Therapy:081310-outdoor-chalkboard-1_rect540

Chalkboard surfaces are really popular right now, and for a good reason.  It’s such a fun yet functional way to decorate.  Here are some other neat chalkboard ideas that I’ve seen on Pinterest:

This cute Back to School Chalkboard Lunchbox from Scissors & Spatulas.

This 12 month baby photo sequence from The Letter b Photography

This adorable kids’ chalkboard table from Thrifty Like Me

And I love this dining room chalkboard wall from Country Living!

Thanks so much for sharing, Annamaria!
Have fun making chalkboard surfaces!
