These adorable Turkey Sandwich Cookies deserve to make an appearance at every Thanksgiving dinner! They’re so fun to make and decorate with kids!
I’m usually in charge of decorating the kids’ table when we attend Thanksgiving with my in-laws. I love setting out the coloring supplies, adding a festive table cloth and decor, and making it look so cute for the kids! I always like to make a special treat for the kiddos too, since many of them aren’t huge pie fans.
In the past, I’ve done these Turkey Donut Treats and these Turkey Krispies Treats. Both are so easy and fun! But this year, I think I’ll be adding these Turkey Sandwich Cookies to the array of delicious food at the Thanksgiving dinner table.
My son and I had a great time making these together! It’s a perfect activity with the kids! I simply made some cake mix cookies, then prepared an easy buttercream frosting and reserved a little to color orange for the turkey feet. I frosted the cookies and then we added the candy googly eyes, an orange M&M beak, and candy corn feathers on each.
I think they are so adorable! And they couldn’t possibly be any tastier, too!
If you’re looking for the perfect non-pie dessert to bring to your Thanksgiving festivities, these Turkey Sandwich Cookies are just the thing!
They really are so fun and easy to make! And wouldn’t they look so precious at each place setting on the kids’ table? They double as a table decoration and yummy treat!
Turkey Sandwich Cookies
Ingredients
- 15.25 oz Duncan Hines yellow cake mix can also use white or chocolate, depending on the color that you'd like your turkeys to be
- 6 Tbsp. butter melted
- 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
- 1 large egg
- Candy eyes
- Candy corns 5-6 for each
- Orange M&M's about 12
- Buttercream Frosting:
- 1/2 c. butter softened
- 3 1/2 c. powdered sugar
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
- Just enough milk for thinning add 1 Tbsp. at a time and mix in between until the desired consistency is reached
- Orange food coloring
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Lightly grease cookie sheets or line with nonstick baking mats. In the bowl of an electric mixer, mix together cake mix, melted butter, vanilla and egg until fully combined.
- Form and roll dough into walnut-sized balls and place at least 2" apart on prepared cookie sheets. Bake for approximately 8 minutes.
- Allow cookies to cool slightly, then press an orange M&M into the center of HALF of the cookies (before they're completely cooled) to be the turkey's beak.
- Allow cookies to cool completely, then prepare the buttercream frosting by creaming together the softened butter, powdered sugar, vanilla, and just enough milk for thinning together in a bowl of an electric mixer (add the milk 1 Tbsp. at a time, mixing in between). You want it to be nice and creamy, but not runny at all. Mix it for 4-5 minutes to make it extra fluffy and delicious!
- Reserve 2 Tbsp. frosting and put it in a small bowl. Stir in orange food coloring until desired color is reached.
- Frost the cookies with the white frosting and make them into sandwiches. Insert 5-6 candy corns into the frosting around the sides for the turkey feathers.
- Transfer orange frosting to a sandwich-sized zip top bag, snip a TINY piece off the corner of the bag, and pipe on two orange turkey legs to the bottom of each cookie.
- Add a dot of frosting to the back of two candy eyes and place them just above the beak. Enjoy!
Whether you’re hosting Thanksgiving dinner this year or attending it elsewhere, don’t forget to serve up these Turkey Sandwich Cookies! Everyone will be so impressed!
