My sister-in-law was in town this past weekend and we got our craft on with these fun Merry & Bright Marquee and Let It Snow lighted signs!
DIY projects are a favorite past-time of ours when we get together, and this time around she came with a fun idea from Pinterest. The inspiration for this pretty marquee sign is found on A Beautiful Mess. We followed most portions of the tutorial with some changes as noted below. Be sure to visit A Beautiful Mess for the full tutorial.
I am in love with this sign! Aren’t marquee letters just so fun? My sister-in-law made this one, but I’m thinking I might need to make one for myself next year. 🙂
- Our signs measured 16″ x 32″
- We used poster board and even Cardstock that we cut a Silhouette machine for the letters to save on cost. It worked great! Just be sure to lay heavy objects on the letters after gluing them so they dry flat without curling. We glued our letters with E600 as per the directions on the original tutorial. We tried spray adhesive, but it wasn’t strong enough.
- We used the Aharoni font for our letters in size 500 bold
- We didn’t add the wood paneling on back because we were lazy. 🙂 It saved some time and we weren’t planning on hanging ours anyway.
- We spray painted our wood. Those pieces got covered so fast! Score!
- We gave our letters a coat of clear acryllic spray to keep the glitter on better.
- We actually marked the places where we wanted to drill with chocolate chips. Would you expect anything less from me? 🙂
- We used a 1/4″ drill bit and set our signs on cans on the floor while we drilled so we didn’t have to worry about damaging things.
- When we taped the lights in back, we ripped the strips in half. They held much better than the Duck tape that was the full width.
- We needed three strings of 50 count mini lights for the marquee sign and two strings of 50 for the Let it Snow Sign.
I decided to make a variation of the marquee sign and instead have it say “Let it Snow” with lights interspersed to look like falling snow. I love how it turned out! And I must say it was much less work than the marquee sign because there was much less drilling.
It’s really hard to tell from the photo, but I used crystal glitter on my letters. I needed two strands of 50 lights because of the spacing of the holes, but I had extra, so I’m going to put a garland in front of the sign later and then thread the extra lights through.
Just a little disclaimer…this is a big project. It’s fun and we had a great time, but it was really involved…more so than we expected. But, we had the weekend to accomplish it. 🙂
We are so pleased with the final products!
