Layered Pudding Dessert

It’s Day 3 of “Family Friendly Food Week” here and I wanted to share something sweet, “chocolate-y”, and completely delicious.  This dessert pops up frequently on Pinterest in many flavors and forms.  I’ve tried it in about all of them and have settled for what I think is the winning combo of layers.

The chocolate cake crust, cookie crust, lemon pudding…these are all varieties of this dessert that I’ve made, but the one above, I think, takes the cake.  This is coming from a “choco-holic”, though.I love that this dessert is so versatile.  If you are not a chocolate person, you can swap out the pudding layer for whatever flavor you prefer.  I like the thinner, no-sugar crust because the other layers compensate for it perfectly, but it’s easy to exchange for a different crust type if you like.  These squares are rich, decadent, and dreamy…a definite splurge, but oh-so-worth it.

All it takes is one bite and you’re hooked!  We had company over this weekend and everyone had seconds and thirds of it.  IT’S. THAT. GOOD.
My mom used to make it by the large cake pans full, and we would literally lick the platter clean when it was gone.
Don’t be intimidated by the four layers.  Each one comes together really quickly, and you’ll be greatly rewarded when it hits your tongue.
Make them and your family will love you even more!

{LAYERED PUDDING DESSERT}
First layer:
 1 cup flour
1/2 cup chopped nuts, optional
1/2 cup butter or margarine
Combine all ingredients and press in the bottom of the pan.  Bake at 350 for about 15 minutes.  Let cool.
Second Layer:
1 8-ounce package cream cheese, softened to room temperature
1 cup powdered sugar
1 cup Cool Whip
Mix all together and gently spread over the crust.
Third Layer:
Prepare 2 packages of instant chocolate pudding (or other flavor of choice) according to the package directions.  Spread over the cream cheese layer.
Fourth Layer:
Spread what’s left of the Cool Whip container over the pudding layer
Top with nuts, shaved chocolate, toffee or candy bar bits, etc.  Refrigerate, then enjoy!
