Remember the Mystery Dish Challenge? I’ll give another brief synopsis for those of you who are just joining us. I’ve partnered with a group of 12 bloggers in participating in a monthly challenge where a “mystery box” of ingredients is revealed and the rest of us get to concoct something amazing using two or three of the options. It’s been tons of fun so far, and I’m sure that won’t change! I hope you’re enjoying it too.
This month’s ingredients were:
Lamb {rack, leg, shoulder, ground, etc}
Apple
Butternut Squash
Puff Pastry
Frosted Flakes
Goat Cheese
Fresh Rosemary
Cherry Pie Filling
Spinach
Coriander
We were asked to use three. I have to admit, I was pretty stumped at first glance. Krista really tested our abilities this time around, but I loved it! In the end, dessert always wins, so I chose to make some tasty Apple Turnovers…with a spin! You might think you’ve had a good turnover, but you haven’t really ’til you’ve tried these! 🙂
I threw a secret ingredient in to sweeten up the apple filling mixture a little more. I’ll reveal it below in the recipe.
Don’t they look fabulous? Not to worry-even the most novice of bakers can re-create this recipe. (Hint, hint…they use store-bought puff pastry, so no homemade crust is involved.) In short, they’re semi-homemade. Isn’t that wonderful? I thought so.
{PUFF PASTRY APPLE TURNOVERS}
Adapted from Taste of Home
Yield: 8 servings
1/3 cup sugar
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
3/4 cup Frosted Flakes, crushed finely4 cups chopped peeled apples
1 package (17.3 ounces) frozen puff pastry, thawed
1 package (17.3 ounces) frozen puff pastry, thawed
TOPPING:
3 tablespoons butter, melted
2 tablespoons sugar
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Vanilla ice cream, optional
3 tablespoons butter, melted
2 tablespoons sugar
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Vanilla ice cream, optional
In a large bowl, combine the sugar, flour, cinnamon and Frosted Flakes. Add apples and toss to coat. On a lightly floured surface, roll out each pastry sheet into a 12-in. square. Cut each into four squares. Spoon about 1/2 c. apple mixture into the center of each square; fold diagonally in half and press edges to seal (I used a fork).
Place on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. In a small bowl, combine the butter, sugar and cinnamon; brush over pastry. Bake at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for about 15 minutes, or until golden brown. Serve warm with ice cream if desired.
These apple pie pockets are truly phenomenal. With a flaky outside, sweet and fruity inside, and cinnamon-sugar-coated outside, what’s not to love? And need I mention that they look ever-so impressive? Your family just might start bowing down to you after they partake of your creation. Move over Martha!
While these were baking, we called a friend and invited him to come enjoy these with us. He had just eaten a large meal, but when he heard the word “Apple Turnovers”, he almost knocked down our door. There’s always room for dessert, am I right? Especially when it’s this dessert.These would be a fun alternative to the traditional apple pie on Thanksgiving too!

Here’s the amazing creations that my fellow “Mystery-Dishers” created this month. Apparently a few of us were thinking on the Apple Turnover brain wave. 🙂
