Disney’s Big Hero 6 and DIY Stuffed Sock Baymax Craft

My kids are so excited for the release of Disney’s Big Hero 6 in theaters November 7th!  So in preparation for the big event, we picked up a few fun movie-themed items at Walmart and then made our own no-sew stuffed sock Baymax!
I don’t think my son liked it at all.  🙂  He was thrilled to add the cute poster to his room.  The kids got a good laugh out of Baymax’s big belly that wouldn’t fit into his armor.  Ha!  He’s such a sweet robot, and so resembles a big, cuddly marshmallow to me.

Ever since we saw the preview for Disney’s Big Hero 6, the anticipation started to build, and we knew we had to go see this movie. But since we can’t watch it for a few more days, I let the kids choose a fun poster and Big Hero 6 book from Walmart to tide them over.

“The Big Battle” describes the adventures of the superhero-like team of six inexperienced crime-fighters who are led by Hiro, a robotics genius.

Since my daughter’s such a great reader, we gathered around while she told the tale.  We learned that Baymax, Hiro’s friend, can actually scan a person to check their health…such a great ability to have!  The remaining individuals each possess unique skills that they contribute to the team.
Right now I’m looking into my crystal ball and predicting that Baymax will my kids’ favorite character from the movie.  I would bet my prized chocolate on it.  So we just had to make our own fluffy white friend.  The fact that Baymax’s looks are quite simple (and adorable, I might add) makes him so easy to replicate in a fun craft/toy that the kids might just do flips when they see!  I’ll show you how.
He’s so squeezable and lovable, don’t you think?
All it takes to make a stuffed Baymax toy are an adult-sized white sock, a bouncy ball, black permanent marker, stuffing, some string or twine and a glue gun!  I whipped one out for each of my two oldest kids in no time flat, and they’ve had a blast playing with them ever since!
Grab your sock and put the bouncy ball in the toe.  Pinch it underneath and use the string to cinch it tight, then tie.
Stuff the sock, making his body smaller up top and larger at the bottom, just like the real Baymax.

Tie it off before you get to the ribbing of the sock.

Leave about 1 1/2″ after the tie and cut the rest off.

Snip up the ribbing, splitting it in half.  These will be his stubby legs.

Add a little stuffing inside both and hot glue closed.

Glue the ends closed as well.

Cut off the very top of the sock.

Now cut the remainder in half.  These will be Baymax’s arms.

Add a little stuffing to each arm and hot glue it closed. Glue the top and bottom closed as well.
Now hot glue the arms on.  I put a dot of glue where his hands are to secure them to his sides, because they were wanting to pop up.  Draw on the eyes with a black permanent marker, and that’s it!  How cute is he?!
The potential of an old sock is quite amazing!  The kids decided their Baymaxes were brothers who would work together with the rest of the bunch.  I just love it when they get along (my kids, not the robots).  🙂
The two cute robots teamed up in a few mini battles to defeat the bad guys.  All in a day’s work!
Now we’re waiting on the edge of our seats for November 7th to arrive so we can hit the theaters to watch Disney’s Big Hero 6!  Do you have kiddos who are dying to see it as well?

Thanks Evelyn! It's funny, but my kids play more with toys like this than the ones they make nowadays with all the gadgets and sounds. Sometimes simpler is better! I hope your grandbabies enjoy this cute Baymax!

Yeah, my kids are so excited to see the movie and I can't wait until I can take them all! We have a super busy weekend coming up so I'm thinking maybe Veteran's Day? I don't know. Your sock Baymaxes are SO cute! I'm definitely going to make a couple for my littles this week. They will flip! #client

You're a genius! I'm so going to have to get some stuffing and do this with my daughter ASAP. She and I went to see the movie on opening day (thanks to Disney's genius marketing which made her dying to see it for weeks beforehand) and she loved it. Thanks for sharing this great idea! FYI- I'll be hosting a new link party starting Saturdays at 8 pm over at www.averystreetdesign.com called "Found & Foraged," and it would be so fun if you could join us! xo.

OK, had to come back and let you know we tried it! The second I mentioned this to my daughter she was so excited. We made them - the instructions were easy to follow and they turned out great. (We had to make four of course...one for each brother and one for a friend...) This made her so happy. Just wanted to let you know and say thanks again! Hope to see you Saturday. Take care.

I did this using some old tights. They were pretty heavy and as thick as most socks. It worked pretty well. My girls were THRILLED. Thanks for the fun craft!

You just made a easy and cheap birthday guest treat. I love giving something the kids can use and love. This will do fantastically.
