DIY Duck Tape Christmas Card with Built-In Gift Card Pocket!

This post brought to you by Duck Brand provided by ShurTech Brands, LLC. All opinions are 100% mine.

I’m one of those people who loves a homemade card.  Are you like me?
I rarely go to the store to purchase them for special occasions.  The cards that I make and give are simple, yet heartfelt and thoughtful.  I’ll let you in on a little secret (if you promise not to tell anyone). I always love to read the cards I receive, but I rarely keep them.  Gasp!  There…I said it.
I do have a few that are very precious and sentimental from grandparents and other special people in my life who have passed on.  I treasure those expressions of love and keep them in a special memory box.
However, most day-to-day thank you or even the occasional birthday card goes the way of all the earth, because I just don’t have room to store them.
With that in mind, this Christmas season, I wanted to create the card of all cards.  The one that no individual (not even I) would feel right about throwing away. 🙂  The unique, open-able creation that is so inconceivably captivating and baffling that it will literally take the receiver’s breath away.
Without further ado, meet that card…..
A crafty wonder made of magical Duck® brand holiday prints and complete with a built-in gift card holder within its festive walls.  Here she is in all her glory.  Let’s pause for a brief moment of silence in honor of this beautiful one-of-a-kind creation……………………………….

All right, now I’ll tell you how you can create your own.
For this project, the supplies are SO straight-forward!  You’ll need three or four varieties of Duck Tape in delightfully fun holiday prints.  Choose from:
Seasonal Sweets
Snowman
Holiday Bows
Penguin
and Seasonal Colors

You’ll also need some wax paper and a small piece of Cardstock.

Don’t be intimidated by the many steps below.  Anyone can make this card in a snap!
My husband was the mastermind behind this project, so he crafted while I played photographer.
Place strips of tape, overlapping each other slightly, on a big piece of wax paper.  We used the Seasonal Sweets Duck Tape design for the outside of our card.  How long your strips are will determine the size of your card.  Ours was approximately 5×7″ in final measurements.

No worries if the edges are uneven.  That will be easily fixed later.

While still stuck to the wax paper, fold the card in half to create a crease as a guideline.

Now carefully peel the tape from the wax paper.

Flip the tape over so it’s sticky side up on the wax paper.
Make a patch of Duck Tape that’s slightly smaller than your gift card by overlapping small strips of tape.  The goal is for your gift card to poke out a little.

Now stick your card to the tape and cut around it.

Place that small rectangle on the sticky side of the tape wherever you’d like it to end up in your finished card.  We put ours on the left bottom.  Now tear strips that are a little longer than your gift card rectangle (leave about 1/2″ on either side of the rectangle you just stuck down).

Make sure the bottom of your new strip comes below the bottom of the rectangle that you stuck on.  Essentially, you want the new strip to have something to stick to on three sides.  Make sure it goes pattern side down.

On your last strip for the pocket, fold down the top a bit so the patterned side is showing as a lip.

Now stick it patterned side down, overlapping it on the other strip.  Make sure to leave room for your gift card to peek over the top of the pocket.

Now you’ve got a fun pocket that will hold a gift card!

Now cut a piece of Cardstock to fit on one side of your card.  This will be where you can write a personal message.  You could also skip the Cardstock and instead put a family or other picture in its place.

Now we’re going to frame the Cardstock, to ensure that it stays in place and to give the inside a more finished look.  We chose to use the Holiday Bows tape design for the inside of our card, for a pretty contrast.  Place a strip of tape on the bottom of the inside of your card, making sure to line it up as best as you can with the bottom of the other tape.  There are no do-overs on this portion of the project, so be sure to line it up and get a good tight bond between tapes the first time.

Now do the same to the top inside of the card…

…and the right inside.

Now finish framing your piece of Cardstock by placing a strip of tape on the left side of it.  Make sure that it sticks to both the Cardstock and the sticky side of the tape on the other side.

Now cover the side of the pocket, making sure that your tape comes exactly along the side line of the inside of your pocket.  Don’t let it go any farther over, or there won’t be room to insert your gift card.

Do the same for the other side of the pocket, making sure the strip of tape exactly follows the line of the inside of your pocket.

Now cover the rest of your pocket with a strip of tape.

Cover the rest of the inside of your card with strips of tape.  For visual appeal, try to make the tape lines go all in the same direction (totally optional, though).

Cover the left side of your card with a strip of tape.

Now trim around the outside of your card to even out the edges.  Make sure you don’t cut into the gift pocket or Cardstock inside.

Ta da!  The card could totally be finished at this point, but we decided to spruce it up a bit more with a Christmas tree on the outside.

Grab a large piece of wax paper and tear it in half.

Now fold down the top a bit.

Place the folded edge on top of your other piece of wax paper, overlapping the two by about 1 1/2″.

Place a piece of tape where the two pieces overlap.

Now overlap a few more strips going up and down.  Using a cookie cutter or another Christmas-shaped stencil, trace a Christmas design on the section of tape.

Cut around the shape and then carefully peel off the wax paper.  The overlap that we created in the wax paper should create a nice tab for easy removal.

Now make a rectangle, by overlapping strips of another pattern of holiday Duck Tape (we used the Snowman design) on your wax paper.  Make sure that it’s slightly larger than your Christmas shape and trim around it to even out the edges.

Now peel the rectangle off the wax paper and stick it to the front of your card.  Trace around the edges of the Christmas shape and rectangle with a black marker to make the designs pop.
Write a fun message on the Cardstock inside, insert your gift card into the handy pocket, and you’re done!  Now you have a unique, awesome card to give to a friend or loved one this holiday season.  I’d be surprised if it didn’t make jaws drop. 🙂

Now go forth and give it proudly.  Something this nice deserves to be framed and hung for all the world to see. 🙂
