Copycat Harry & David Moose Munch with Mason Jar Gift Option

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone.  #TasteTheSeason #CollectiveBias
Harry & David’s Moose Munch made with chocolate, caramel popcorn and nuts is simply to die for, so I created a copycat, budget-friendly, version that you’re going to love!
Seriously.  I almost couldn’t taste the difference, and, not to brag, but I consider myself a Moose Munch expert.  🙂

Have you had the pleasure of trying this addicting stuff?
My in-laws send us gift baskets for some of the holidays throughout the year, and when we see the Harry & David label on the delivery box, we literally attack it to see if it includes our favorite caramel chocolate-nut cluster popcorn.   It’s absolutely divine!
I love it when someone else does foots the bill for it, but a few times a year is just not enough, and I just can’t bring myself to hand over my arm and my leg for a small bag of popcorn that I can eat in one sitting. Don’t get me wrong…I need Moose Munch like I need air, but I’m just too cheap, and not afraid to admit it.  🙂

So I hit the kitchen and crafted my own version of Moose Munch.  It’s so perfect that if I were to have a blind test of the two, side-by side, I’m pretty certain I wouldn’t know the difference.Texture is key in this recipe.  Moose Munch caramel popcorn pieces are just the right amount of crunchy, so baking for just the right amount of time is imperative.

It makes a perfect holiday neighbor gift too!  I know what you’re thinking…it’s not even Halloween yet!  But it’s never too early to get those wheels turning about what to give friends and family during the most wonderful time of the year.  After all, Santa’s elves are hard at work around the clock in preparation for the magical day.  🙂
This gift, in contrast, is no sweat!  Just put a few scoopfuls in a Mason jar, package it up all pretty with a piece of festive fabric, some ribbon, twine and a tag, and you’re good to go!
See, you don’t have to break the bank to give something beautiful and delicious to the ones you love!  I think homemade gifts are often much more from the heart, as well.  I know baking and cooking is one of the primary ways I show love for my family.

All it takes are a few easy-to-find ingredients from Walmart and a little TLC, and you’re on your way to the taste bud experience of a lifetime…both for yourself and for whomever you choose to give this wonderful gift.  🙂

The Baker’s chocolate is on the baking aisle at Walmart with all the chocolate chips.

{COPYCAT HARRY & DAVID MOOSE MUNCH}

12 cups popped popcorn
1 cube (1/2 cup) butter
2 Tbsp. light corn syrup
dash of salt
1 1/4 c. mini Jet-Puffed Marshmallows
1 3/4 c. brown sugar
1/4 c. evaporated milk
1 tsp. vanilla
4 oz. (1 pkg.) Baker’s German Sweet Chocolate Baking Bar
3/4 c. Planter’s Lightly Salted Peanuts, divided
Pop popcorn and set aside.  Add butter, corn syrup, salt, marshmallows, brown sugar, and evaporated milk to a pan and stir over medium heat until smooth.  Allow to come to a boil, while stirring vigorously, then remove from heat.  Stir in vanilla.

Pour over popcorn and lightly toss to incorporate throughout.

Remove popcorn to a baking sheet that’s been lined with parchment or wax paper.  Bake at 300 degrees Fahrenheit for 17-20 minutes, or until the desired crispiness is reached.  Bake for about 13-15 minutes if you like a gooey, softer popcorn.

Place 3 c. of the baked popcorn in a bowl.

Melt Baker’s chocolate and pour over the 3 c. of caramel popcorn.

Add 1/2 c. peanuts and stir to incorporate, then let the chocolate set.  I put mine in the refrigerator just until the chocolate solidified.

Add chocolate popcorn back into the caramel popcorn and toss with remaining 1/4 cup peanuts.  Serve or give away immediately, because this stuff is best when fresh!

Then divvy it out into jars for gifts or just munch to your heart’s content!
There’s just something about a comforting jar of handmade goodness that says, “I care”.   And if it’s filled with fresh, copycat Harry & David Moose Munch…all the better!

Your neighbors are going to love you.  The bar has been set a mile high, so be prepared to give this every year from here on out!  They’ll be expecting it!If you need more inspiration, check out the Cooking Up Good website. This may sound dumb, but you go from popping 12 cups of popcorn to using 3 cups of popcorn.. DID I miss something?

Not dumb at all, Jane. So for that step, you'll take 3 cups of the caramel popcorn that you made and pour the melted Baker's Chocolate over just that portion to create your blended chocolate and caramel mix. Hope that makes sense. Feel free to ask more questions.

I've checked out other similar recipes but they sounded too "brown-sugary". Moose munch coating is creamier. I think your addition of marshamallows and the evaporated milk hits it on the nose! Can't wait to try. BTW, it is evaporated milk, and not sweetened condensed, correct?

Did I miss something. But when do you add in the other 1/4 cup of peanuts?
    • Christine says

      October 18, 2016 at 5:42 pm

Thanks for the catch! I just updated the instructions. You'll mix in the remaining 1/4 cup of peanuts at the end when you toss it all together.
