I’m loving having my kids home for the summer. We’ve been playing and vacationing to the max! So I kind of cringe to even say this, but before you know it, school will be in session again. The stores have already stocked their aisles for back-to-school. Sad day. 🙁 But the silver lining is that I get to load up on pretty, colorful projects supplies at a great price! I get giddy like a school girl when I see the markers, colored pencils and notebooks out in full force.
I’m thrilled to be a part of the Ribbon Retreat’s A-Z Back to School Series! I selected “C” because it’s the best letter ever (i.e. my name begins with it). 🙂 I’ll be homeschooling my son for preschool this year, so I thought a supply caddy would come in very handy. I love the idea of keeping all our art components in one place, organized, and at our finger tips. And it doesn’t hurt that it looks so cute with all the bright colors intermixed!
I’m slightly obsessed with mini buckets. Every time I go to Target, I hit the Dollar Spot for new varieties and always end up leaving with way too many. My husband wondered if I’d ever find a use for them, so this project said, “I told you so.” 🙂
The buckets are darling by themselves, but I really wanted to throw another fun element into the mix. The ribbon tassels are just the thing!
Ribbon tassels are unbelievably easy to make and so adorable if I do say so myself!
I decided to put the tassels on every other bucket so things didn’t get too busy looking, but you can totally attach them to every one if you’d like.
Here’s what you’ll need to make this convenient supply caddy:
A large metal pizza pan or other circular tray (mine was 16″ in diameter)
7 mini buckets and 1 larger bucket for the center
Hot Glue Gun
Supplies to fill the buckets
Start by grabbing a scrap piece of cardboard to wrap the ribbon around. The wider your piece, the longer your tassels will be. Hold the ends of two strands of ribbon. I didn’t cut mine until after I was done wrapping.
Wrap the ribbon strands around about 6-8 times (or more), depending on how full you want your tassels to be. Make sure both sets of ends end up on top.
Now hold those ends in place and thread two strands of ribbon (mine measured about 12″) underneath the wrapped ribbon.
Tie the ribbon strands tightly in the center. Sorry about the blurry photo.
Turn it over and cut down the center of your ribbon.
Make sure the knot is on bottom.
Pinch the two parts together.
Now wrap another piece of ribbon tightly around a few times, close to the top.
Tie tightly in back to secure.
Trim the long ends that come from the knots.
Now cut a small piece of ribbon (about 3″ long), wrap around your bucket handle, and hot glue together at the ends.
Now just glue your ribbon tassel to the loop, making sure that the knot is in back where you can’t see it. Repeat this process for additional tassels.
Now arrange the buckets on your tray, fill with essential art supplies and get busy creating! It turns easily on the table so kids don’t have to reach over to grab things.
