All opinions are mine alone.I’ve been dying to throw a red & white vintage drive-in movie party for my kids, and I’m pleased to announce that I finally cracked down and put one together! The entertainment was super simple-a movie of course! The treats at the concession stand incorporated some of kids’ favorite cereals…Frosted Flakes, Froot Loops, Apple Jacks, and Rice Krispies. It’s hard to go wrong with those!
My kids are always begging to have friends over and this was a perfect opportunity to escape the summer heat outdoors for some great fun inside! It was a huge hit!
I made an inexpensive red and white backdrop by taping crepe paper to the wall in vertical rows. Then I strung a “Concessions” banner over the top to finish it off. You can download and print the letters at the bottom of this post, then just cut and back them with brown kraft paper or cardstock. I also threw in a few small vintage cars that I had lying around my house, for table decorations.
I lined the table with some extra Christmas wrapping paper and used a burlap table runner as an accent. I made food labels by spraying a sheet of black vinyl with chalkboard spray paint, writing on them with chalkboard markers, then backing them with brown kraft cardstock.
When our cute neighbor friends arrived, I gave everyone 12 tickets each, which were redeemable at the “Concessions” stand for various tasty goodies which you’ll see below.
The kids referenced this faux chalkboard sign for ticket prices. (Download and print it below). They really jumped on board with counting out their tickets and determining which items they could buy with what they had. 🙂 As the movie progressed and their snacks disappeared, I replenished their ticket supply. I didn’t want them to feel too limited with all this good food around. 🙂
Who wants an Apple Jacks Cookie? I do! The kids went wild for these! They’re super soft and infused with oodles of…you guessed it…crunchy Apple Jacks!
{APPLE JACKS COOKIES}
1 c. (2 sticks) salted butter, softened
1 c. packed light brown sugar
3/4 c. granulated sugar
2 tsp. vanilla extract
2 large eggs
3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
2 c. coarsely chopped Apple Jacks
Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. In the bowl of an electric mixer, cream together butter, sugars, vanilla and eggs until well-combined. In a separate bowl, stir together flour, salt, baking soda, cinnamon and Apple Jacks. Add to wet mixture and mix until just combined. Roll into walnut-sized balls and place on a cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 10-12 minutes. Be careful not to over-bake! Let sit on cookie sheet for 5 minutes, then remove to a cooling rack.
We took a vote, and these pretties were the party favorite! Marshmallow-y, sweet Froot Loop Bars on a stick to avoid messy hands! I appropriately termed them “Tastes like Candy” Bars.
{TASTES LIKE CANDY FROOT LOOP BARS}
3 Tbsp. butter
1 pkg. mini white marshmallows
6 c. Froot Loops
Melt butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add marshmallows and stir over heat until marshmallows are completely melted. Remove from heat and add Froot Loops and stir until completely combined. Press mixture into a 9″x13″ pan that has been buttered. You may need to butter your hands to prevent the mixture from sticking while you press it into the pan.
What’s a movie without nachos? I served up the fruit version by slicing green apples, then drizzling them in melted chocolate and a homemade microwave caramel sauce (recipe from Cookies & Cups). Then I sprinkled them with Frosted Flakes for added sweetness and a fun texture and served them in some brown kraft fry boxes. Catch the free printable Nachos label at the bottom of this post.
My favorite refreshment was definitely the “Snap Crackle Pop” Corn. Freshly-popped corn covered in melted white chocolate, then combined with some amazing add-ins…crunchy Rice Krispies, colored chocolate candies, and peanuts. The combination could not be more perfect in my book.
{“SNAP CRACKLE POP” CORN}
12 c. popped popcorn
2 pkgs. (12 oz. each) white chocolate chips, melted
2 1/2 c. Rice Krispies
1 c. peanuts
1 1/2 c. chocolate colored candies
Pop the corn. Melt white chips and pour over popcorn. Stir to coat. Carefully stir in Rice Krispies, peanuts and chocolate colored candies, so as to not crush the popcorn pieces. Adding in the chocolate candies later will prevent melting and color bleeding. Pour mixture out on a large piece of wax paper and let set. Store in an air-tight container until ready to serve.
We can’t forget the drinks, now can we?! I served up a phenomenal “Cherry Fizz Flipout”, in individual glass Mason jar mugs with striped straws, to quench the kids’ thirst.
{CHERRY FIZZ FLIPOUT}
2 liter lemon-lime soda, chilled
.55 oz. cherry drink pkt (dry)
1/2 fresh lime, squeezed
Stir all ingredients together in a large pitcher, then refrigerate until ready to serve (best if made right before so the drink won’t lose fizziness). I doubled the recipe above and it served 10 kids perfectly.
I’ve got Walmart to thank for the gigantic boxes of Kellogg’s cereal that graced the yummy “Concessions” stand sweets.
I love the fun nighttime boxes! My kids enjoy eating this stuff any time-all throughout the day and even as a bedtime snack.
The kids’ jaws dropped when they saw these! How cool is it to chill in a box car in pajamas while snacking on cereal treats and watching Cars 2 on the “big screen”? It’s a child’s dream come true. I thought for sure they’d get cramped up and want a break, but they only left the cute red vehicles to visit the concessions stand. 🙂 I can’t blame them.
A friend gave me a bunch of boxes (she has connections to a local grocery store) and I used a roller to cover them with some leftover paint in my garage. Then, I hot glued on some black paper plates for wheels and a steering wheel and yellow circles in the back for lights.
The guests were thrilled when I told them they could take their cars home afterwards.
Possibly the cutest moment at the party was my baby enjoying an Apple Jacks Cookie in her own miniature car. Adorable!
The kids were mesmerized by the whole experience. It was such a blast!
