DIY Painted Geometric Rug with FrogTape® Textured Surface

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of FrogTape Brand Painter’s Tape. All opinions are 100% mine.

An indoor rug goes from drab to fab after a DIY Painted Geometric Makeover with FrogTape® Textured Surface and makes its new home outside, greeting guests with a bright “hello!”

As I mentioned a little bit ago with my daughter’s dresser makeover, I’m in full “refresh and re-do” mode right now!  I’m not sure what’s gotten into me or if it’s something in the warmer air, but I love it!  I just hope I can keep my aspirations reigned in so the hubby doesn’t suspect me of wanting to tear down the whole house and rebuild.  Ha!  But he can’t complain too much, because this project wasn’t on his “honey-do” list. 🙂  No, I gladly accepted the self-proclaimed challenge to upcycle our entryway rug, and you’ll see why.
Here the sad, dingy-looking thing before I showed it a little TLC (a.k.a slathered it in paint) and gave it a fresh, new appearance with bright, clean colors!
Now, I know what you’re thinking…why on earth would you paint a rug when you could just go out and buy a new one?
Did I read your mind?  🙂  Well, let me tell you.
A. I couldn’t find an outdoor rug that I liked
B. If I paint the rug, it means I can hand-pick the colors
C. If I paint the rug, I get to select my own design and let my creativity run wild, which is something I’m passionate about. 🙂
Granted, it’s more work to paint an old rug than to grab a new one during your shopping run, but store-bought rugs just don’t have the character or sentimental value that this hand-painted rug now does for me.  Not to mention, I adore it!
Geometric patterns are in right now, and I’ve fully jumped on board with the trend with this fun DIY project.  What I especially appreciate about geometrics, as it relates to this rug, are that I can easily design and create my own pattern with just some paint and FrogTape® Textured Surface tape.  See for yourself.
I recommend this method for rugs with small areas.  This technique is also best suited for rugs that will be used outdoors because the paint tends to remove the soft feel of the carpet.  The texture on my rug was also not too “shaggy”, so it cooperated perfectly with the paint.

{SUPPLIES}:
FrogTape® Textured Surface painter’s tape
White Acrylic Paint
Coordinating Color of Acrylic Paint (I used Bahama Blue by Apple Barrel)
Bristled Paint Brush
Here’s a quick FrogTape how-to:
Step 1: Paint the rug white.  This will take a few coats in order to cover the original design and color.  Let dry completely in between coats.
Step 2: When you’re satisfied with the paint coverage, mask your rug in the pattern of your choice using FrogTape® Textured Surface Tape.  I tried to ensure that all the lines running in the same direction were parallel to one another.  I did my best, anyway.  🙂
Step 3: Run a damp rag along the edges of the tape to start the bonding process.

Check out what happens next with the wonderful FrogTape® Textured Surface Tape.  It will boggle your mind.  🙂
Step 4: Grab the Liquid PaintBlock® Edge Sealer™, remove the lid, then tightly screw on the lid with the bristles after removing its outer cap.
Step 5: Run the bristles along the edges of the tape while squeezing the bottle slightly to dispense the liquid. Apply generously to ensure a good bond between tape and rug.  Let dry for 15 minutes.
You can see in the close-up photo above how the Liquid PaintBlock® Edge Sealer™ causes the tape edges to tightly cling to the textured surface.  I could even hear a slight suction sound as I ran the liquid along the tape.  It was quite satisfying and comforting. 🙂
How does the magic happen, you might ask?  FrogTape® has built-in PaintBlock® Technology that works hand-in-hand with the Liquid PaintBlock® Edge Sealer™ to form a tight bond and keep unwanted paint out, creating crisp, perfect lines, even on textured surfaces!
Step 6: Paint your second color and let dry completely.  Then immediately remove FrogTape® Textured Surface tape for the big reveal!
Ta da! Look at those sharp, clean lines!  I couldn’t be happier with my “new” geometric-patterned rug, made possible by FrogTape® Textured Surface Tape.  The stuff is truly amazing and I’m an adoring fan now.  I love that I can confidently paint on textured surfaces without worrying about paint smudging or bleeding through.
Be sure to follow FrogTape® on Twitter for more fabulous inspiration!

I love the pattern you made! and the colors! Did you use acrylic paint for the whole thing? Or was the white spray paint? Super cute re-do.

Hi Kristy! I used acrylic paint for the entire thing. I tried white spray paint in the beginning and it didn't have good coverage at all.

The rug is darling-- will the paint hold up on the material with the elements?

Thanks Emily! The acrylic paint should hold up just fine. Mine endured a few days of rain last week and still looks great.

This looks so pretty! I tried to paint a rug once and the color never showed up. Probably used the wrong paint. This looks so good I'm willing to go for it again!

Your project is an inspiration. I have been thinking about making a canvas drop cloth into a floor rug, and the Frog tape is the perfect product for that project. Thanks so much for the idea! Keep up the good work.
