I threw my son an out-of-this-world fun Superhero Birthday Party using a red, black, yellow and white color scheme for his fourth birthday a week ago! Possibly the best part? It was all done on-the-cheap! Scroll down for all the great details!
The theme of the party was a no-brainer since my son is obsessed with all things superhero right now. I had a blast styling all the elements from the invitation to the color-coordinated food to the games and favors. This party screamed boy, yet the girls that attended had a ball too! Everyone showed up in superhero attire, enjoyed a yummy lunch followed by great entertainment.
Possibly the best part about this party is that, like other parties I style, it was accomplished on a very low budget using pre-made free printables as decor and cupcake toppers, a wrapping paper backdrop, Dollar Store candy, and DIY paper favor bags made over with a simple black card stock mask. Parties certainly don’t need to be expensive to be fun! That’s my philosophy.
{INVITATION}
I created his superhero party invitation in PicMonkey. It was super simple to do. I just uploaded a chalkboard background and used fonts and a comic bubble from their options.
{THE CAKE}
For the cupcakes, I made my Buttermilk Chocolate Cake base, followed by a vanilla buttercream frosting colored yellow. I piped the icing onto the tops in swirls using a Ziploc bag with the corner snipped. Then I placed them on a wooden stand and white platters with Lemon Heads candy surrounding.
I used THESE free printables for my cupcake toppers, printed them at an office store, and cut, then taped to sucker sticks.
I found these cute mini popcorn holders at Hobby Lobby. I thought they went perfectly with the “BOOM”, “POW”, “POP!” superhero theme. And what kid doesn’t love popcorn?
{THE TABLE ARRAY}
The table spread. I printed the “BOOM”, “POP”, “POW” call-outs HERE. I stuck a few more comic call-outs on wooden dowels and displayed them in spray-painted white vases in the back. Get the free printables HERE. They’d also be great as cake toppers.
I filled my candy jar pedestal with Lemon Heads and displayed a large Super Man figure that my son received for Christmas. The backdrop is just overlapped wrapping paper and then I taped a few balloons to the top edge.
I dipped some jumbo marshmallows in red and yellow candy melts. These were a hit!
{TABLE DECOR}
Comic Book Banner
I made this super easy superhero comic book pennant banner using the pages of a real comic book. Simply cut triangles, tape to some white string, and hang!

Grapes-ENHANCES AGILITY
Carrots-IMPROVES LASER VISION
Strawberries-ENERGY BLAST
Broccoli-BUILDS MUSCLE
I found the fun red and yellow filled licorice at Walmart. I thought they were absolutely perfect!
We served pizza, veggies and fruit to balance out the many sugary treats. I filled my glass drink dispenser with water. I’ve found that with kids, non-colored drinks are always ideal.
{GAMES/ENTERTAINMENT}
I printed out some plain superhero masks, cut them out, and the kids got to color and decorate them as they wanted. They totally got into this.

For this easy game of pin the mask on the superhero, I took a picture of my son in superhero attire, then had it printed in an engineer print at Office Max for just $3.90. The kids used the masks they had decorated and we had a contest to see who could get theirs closest to Batman Blake’s eyes. It was a really close call, so we ended up pulling out the measuring tape. 🙂
My little Captain America birthday boy.
{FAVORS}
For the simple sweet-filled favor bags, I cut masks out of black card stock and glued them to the fronts.
This was such a fun celebration and really was not hard to pull off, as far as hosting parties goes.
What do you think? Do you know a child who would love a superhero party like this?
