Crafting with Kids: Very Hungry Caterpillars

My kids have always enjoyed reading the book “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” and they love little make-believe “pets” (because mommy won’t let them have the real thing yet), so we decided to make a fun craft centered around both.
The kids named their caterpillars before we even got started.  When we finished, they played all afternoon with the cute, furry things.  My daughter even had to color and cut out a butterfly afterwards for when the caterpillar morphed.  🙂
The caterpillars stay in their jars on the kids’ dressers and get to come out and “play” after school.  This is such a perfect and fun craft project for kids.  You’ll be amazed at how easy these cute creatures are to make.
{WHAT YOU’LL NEED}
Pint-sized Mason Jars
Green Cardstock for the leaves
Hole Punch
1 red and 4 green pom poms for each caterpillar
black pipe cleaners
hot glue
Craft paper for the lid topper, nose and eyes (or use tiny googly eyes)
Trace and cut out a circle the size of your Mason Jar lid.
Let each child label the paper circle with his/her name, then glue the circle to the lid (I did this part using Hot Glue), but the kids can use Mod Podge also.
Draw and cut out a leaf using green cardstock.
Make “bites” in the leaf with your hole punch.
The next part is extremely simple, so it didn’t require pictures.
Hot glue a red pom pom to a green pom pom.  Next, glue three more green pom poms to that portion, making them go up and down instead of just straight.
Glue on small black pipe cleaner pieces, tiny paper circles for eyes and a small paper triangle nose.
Place them in your jars with a leaf and the kids now have a fun furry pet to play with!
Natalie is really sweet with it.  She walked around carefully holding it in her hands.
Blake couldn’t help but show it off.  He was so proud.
The kids can also cut out “fruit” pieces with patterned paper for more caterpillar food.
Crafting with kiddos is so much fun!

Aww, how cute! I don't know if my son is quite old enough, but I bet he'd love this because we read that book all the time.
