Rubber Ducky Diaper Cake

It seems as if there are baby showers galore every month of the year, so I like to come up with unique gifts like this fun and adorable Rubber Ducky Diaper Cake that doubles as a decoration!

One of the first gifts I received as a soon-to-be, first-time mother at the shower that my mom threw for me was a bath set.  It included washcloths, a rubber ducky toy, baby shampoo and lotion.  I didn’t have a clue at that time just how much use and love that cute little yellow duck would get.
Now, over eight years later, it still floats around while the kids lounge and play in the bath. 🙂
So because I have a few baby showers in the near future to attend, I wanted to come up with a creative yet useful gift idea, and I knew it had to incorporate a rubber duck.

I know first hand that diapers are always a hot commodity when the little one arrives, so I usually like to include those in what I give the new mother as well.  I decided to combine the two ideas into a diaper cake bath gift with cotton ball “soap suds”.
It came together in under thirty minutes, is something even the self-proclaimed “non-crafty” can tackle, and I just know the mama’s going to appreciate it!
I love that it makes a cute display on the gift table as well during the event.
I headed to my local Family Dollar and grabbed some Huggies diapers to help make the “cake”.  Find a location near you HERE.
When I had my baby, just four months ago, my mind was boggled at how many diapers a newborn requires in a day, and he’s my fourth child!  Ha ha! I thought I’d stocked up on them pretty well before he was born, but the supply didn’t last long.
For this particular gift I purchased size 2 because babies are in it for a fair amount of time compared to newborn and size 1.
I just love outfitting my baby in Huggies diapers and appreciate that Family Dollar is a one stop shop when I run out and need to quickly grab more, along with other baby necessities.  And I know that I’ll always find those items at a great value there.
{SUPPLIES}
Huggies Diapers (I used 14)
Cotton Balls
Large Rubber Bands
Floral Foam (I used two rectangles)
Fabric
Ribbon (I used wide rick rack)
Hot Glue Gun
Scissors
Rubber Ducky
Begin by hot gluing two rectangle pieces of floral foam together side by side.  Place a bowl over the top that fills most of the space of the foam (my bowl was 7″ in diameter) and cut around the bowl, using it as your guide, to create a circle.

I wrapped my foam circle in plastic wrap just so the diapers would stay clean and usable.  Now grab your diapers and begin rolling them up and securing them with a rubber band.  Place the rolled diapers around your foam circle, ensuring they are touching and there’s no big gaps in between.  I used 14, but you may need more or less, depending on the size of your foam.
Now stretch a rubber band all the way around the rolled diapers to hold them together and against the foam circle.  This may require an extra set of hands.

Cut your fabric to be a few inches longer than the distance around the rolled diapers.  I cut mine to be about 3 1/2″ wide and then pressed about 3/4″ on top and bottom down to the back for clean edges.
Now wrap the fabric around the rolled diapers and hot glue to itself in the back.  Tie a ribbon bow or just a knot for decoration.  Trim the ends if necessary.
Now fill the inside space with cotton balls to look like bubbles or soap suds, place your rubber ducky on top, and you’re done!  I added some baby body wash, shampoo, lotion and powder tied together with ribbon on the side, in keeping with the theme of the gift.
How cute is this?  It’s such a fun way to congratulate the new mom!
