Kids will stay busy and content this summer with a colorful ocean creatures craft! Then, if you’d like, combine the works of art into a collage using a scrap piece of wood!
I promised you lots of simple kids craft ideas, and I’m delivering. 🙂
When my oldest daughter was just a baby, we lived about five minutes away from the beach. It was convenient, so we of course visited there often. When we moved away, I knew I would sorely miss the sand in my toes and the sound of the waves crashing down.
I really love our home now, but I still get cravings for a good trip to the beach to boogie board or simply roll up my pant legs and get my feet wet in the salty sea water.
Since we can’t very well just walk to the beach anymore, and because my kids just love keeping busy making cute things indoors on hot summer days, I wanted to come up with an easy craft to get the kids excited about ocean life and the amazing things that exist under the sea. It was also a great opportunity to discuss fun facts about the octopus, turtle and various species of fish as we made our own renditions of them for a wall decoration.
In preparation for this project, I picked up some Scotch® Brand Double Sided Tape and Scotch® Brand Permanent Mounting Tape, along with a few other inexpensive supplies, at my local Walmart.
My kids use Scotch® Brand Double Sided Tape like it’s going out of style on their daily art projects, so we always keep a large stock of it in our craft drawer.
I love that Scotch® Brand, as well as Command™, products are now conveniently located in the craft aisle! Because the less walking around the store I have to do, the better the kiddos behave, which also makes for a much happier mama, and I like to be a happy mama. 🙂
Here’s what you’ll need for this craft:
Cardboard squares (I just found an old box in the garage and cut pieces from it)
Craft foam sheets in various colors
Blue paint
Foam brushes
Buttons
Googly eyes
Pom Poms
Scissors
Let the kids cover their cardboard squares in blue paint to represent the ocean.
For the fish, cut various shapes with your craft foam for the body and fins, as shown above. We also later cut lips.
For the turtles, cut an oval for a body, four of the same shapes for legs, and one circular shape with a flat side for the head. You’ll also want a tiny triangle for the tail.
Now attach the shapes to the cardboard using Scotch® Brand Double Sided Tape.
Almost done.
Now tape on googly eyes and buttons for shell decor and that’s it! Super easy and oh so fun!
For the octopus art, we cut out the tentacles with craft foam, then adhered pom poms and googly eyes to the top using Scotch® Brand Double Sided Tape.
Now comes the really exciting part where we get to see all the separate works of art come together in one place!
Grab your Scotch® Brand Permanent Mounting Tape and place a strip on the top and bottom of the back of each piece of artwork. Peel off the protectant strip, and stick onto a display board or even directly onto a wall.
We chose to make a collage on a scrap piece of wood from the garage so we can display the masterpieces at our new house when we move in just a few weeks.
